First, what is a mission or craftsman style home? How can I achieve this look using the right kitchen handles? Cabinet handles, hey it’s all in the jewelry? Ever see Jessica Alba without some jewelry?
The Craftsman style home was a has it’s roots in the bungalow design, which was built for thousands of years in India. They were built all over the USA between 1900 and 1930. They became popular again in the last ten to fifteen years. Like many design elements of the Arts and Crafts period, the Craftsman home is a work of art as well as a functioning dwelling. Our knobs and pulls reflect the arts and crafts style.
Craftsman houses usually have an open floor plan inside. I believe this design helps our current need for the open concept. While we each live in our own space, (my space, facebook) the family can still be together. It tries to use space effectively, with niches, and creative shelving.
A traditionally built Craftsman is modest, and takes advantage of the site it is located on. In addition, it uses natural materials like local stone or wood. I wouldn’t call it rustic, just natural. The Craftsman home is designed to be a home for life. A simple yet beautiful dwelling.
Mission or craftsman style homes are all the rage here in Wisconsin. Wisconsin? I know, I know we are not architectural trendsetters, but right now I believe these classic designs serve the X, Y, and GenXer’s very well in any market! Why? Fall weather has me thinking about football, hunting, the changing of the season and for those so lucky, renovating the hunting lodge.
